This was kind of a mean comic, based on a couple of situations i've been in recently. One of them was a trip I made in November to Berkeley, California. I went to some punk show with a few friends at that Gilmore venue place, and hung out for a while. Now, given this place is a punk paradise, more leftist thinkers than you can shake a stick at. They hate corporations, capitalism, and everything you've come to expect out of activist leftist punks. But a couple of them, patches and all, were all "let's go score an 8-ball". I had no idea what an 8-ball was, but apparently it's 3 grams of cocaine. What the fuck? They won't buy from gap, but they'll snort coke from a war-torn nation? A country where paramilitary goon squads wonder the country and kill suspected leftist sympathizers, and the left-wing rebels do the same with suspected right-wing sympathizers. And the civilians get caught in the middle. Anyone taking a stand against either group puts their life in danger. Just wearing a patch is asking for a bullet. Union leaders, judges, police force, the entire country is torn apart by war. And where do these waring factions get their money? The drug trade. Drug-using hipsters, punks, and drug aficionados fund the entire operation, all while talking about the evils of capitalism, the great new album from the faint, or the evils of the gap.
A similiar experience happened with a recent trip I took, where a (former) friend brought up "class warfare" with the next sentance talking about coke. She had a peoples solidarity poster on her wall, and bragged about smoking crack.
Actions speak louder than patches or clever political slogans and terms. If you snort coke, I wouldn't go so far as to say you are an awful person, but I would certainly submit you are doing awful person things.
I'm not straight edge. I'm not talking about drugs in general, although I certainly loathe the harder drugs, but that is a seperate issue entirely. Cocaine and heroin are both drugs that come with blood on them. If you thought corporations where evil, the drug trade is the ultimate evil.
